Christopher Wells
(1793 in Wisborough Green, Sussex, England)
Sussex parish records have shown that we find Welles (Wells) families in and around Wisborough Green, Kirdford, Billingshurst, Horsham, Loxwood, Pulborough, Nuthurst, Ashington, and all up and down the "River Arun", as far back as the mid 1500's. I have a mountain of hand written notes that I'm still trying to diegest, and piece together, in order to tie all these people together. In most cases I only have a single given name, a christening/marriage date, and sometimes a spousal first name. It's been quite a puzzel. There are a lot of Christophers, Georges, Thomases and Williams, not to mention Marys, Sarahs, Annes and Hannahs in my database.
Christopher's (b.1793) parents have not yet been proved. There are indications through parish records that his father was George and his mother was Ann, either Gravatt or Sommersell. I'm leaning towards Sommersell, but both were married to a George in that same time frame. Christopher was married to Sarah Ayling, 24 October, 1813, in Kirdford, Sussex. My line comes down through thier son Stephen, born 1815 in Kirdford.
Stephen came to America in 1859, along with three of his oldest sons. His wife Sarah, and seven of the younger children, followed the following May of 1860. They were probably persuaded by Stephen's brother in law, Parkhurst Etherton and his family, who migrated in 1853.
Some of the family groups that I'm reasonably sure fit together are shown below, but I just can't tie them all together properly. My line from Chrisopher down is pretty much a sure thing. If any one out there can shed some light on the others, please e-mail me, so we can figure all this out.
